If there’s a beautiful waterfall in the Philippines that can challenge the waterfalls in places like Bali, it has to be Kawasan Falls. Located in Barangay Matutinao in Cebu’s Badian municipality on its southwestern coast, this multi-tier waterfall is one of the best in the country. Around the area, you can also find other natural attractions such as rivers, freshwater streams, and jungle canyons.
Both international and domestic tourists can’t help but be amazed by the beauty of Kawasan Falls, characterized by its clear turquoise waters, which tourists often say is Gatorade blue, and natural falls.
Kawasan Falls has three waterfall levels, all of which feature natural pools that visitors can take a plunge into. Some of the most popular outdoor activities you can do in Kawasan Falls are canyoneering, rafting, swimming, hiking, and enjoying a picnic.
How to Get to Kawasan Falls
There are various ways to reach Kawasan Falls—by public bus, by private car, or by renting a scooter. However, the cheapest way is the bus option.
By Bus
From Cebu City
You can get to Kawasan Falls from Cebu City by heading to the Southern Bus Terminal and riding the numerous buses going to Bato through Barili. Be sure that the route is Barili as a bus going via Oslob has a longer travel time. The fare costs 200 PHP (~4 USD).
From Cebu City to Kawasan Falls, the travel time is an hour and a half to two hours. However, during rush hour, it can take twice as long. So, it is recommended that you leave early or avoid the rush hour.
From Moalboal
If you are coming from Moalboal and are staying at Panagsama Beach, you first need to ride a tricycle going to the main road. From the main road, hop aboard a bus going to Bato and get off at Kawasan Falls.
You might want to ask the conductor to drop you off at the proper point. Look outside the bus window, too, for signages about Kawasan Falls’ canyoneering. That means you are closer to where you should alight.
The travel time from Moalboal via bus only takes around an hour. The fare is 50 PHP (~1 USD).
From Oslob
The journey from Oslob to Kawasan Falls is the most complicated of the three. This is because you need to take two buses.
The first bus should be that which takes you to Bato. Then, after getting off at Bato, ride the second bus to Badian. Or, hop on a bus to Cebu via Barili. Get off at Kawasan Falls.
Travel time from Oslob to Kawasan Falls should take no more than two hours. Prepare around 250 PHP (~5 USD) for the total fare.
By Private Car Or Scooter
If you don’t want to mingle with the crowd and don’t mind driving to Kawasan Falls by yourself, rent a scooter. Or, hire a private car driver. Be sure to use Google Maps or Waze, setting “Kawasan Falls” as your destination, so you won’t get lost.
Best Time to Visit Kawasan Falls
The dry period or the summer season (from late December to early June) is the best time to visit Kawasan Falls. During this time, the waterfalls are a safer place to trek (since the trails are not too slippery) and do canyoneering, if you opt to partake in this activity. However, these months are also the busiest.
