How CEBU INSIDER Started

My name is Mario and you can call me Mac. I’m the founder of CEBUINSIDER.com.

This is a story about how CEBU INSIDER started.

The website only started in December 2022. However, the idea behind it was conceived way back in 2016 at the peak of the digital nomad movement.

In 2017, the time when I started traveling full-time around the Philippines as a digital nomad, I noticed there was not enough information about traveling as a digital nomad in the country.

Truth be told, it was very tricky (it still is) to navigate around the Philippines as a digital nomad for a lot of reasons, and one of them is the poor internet infrastructure.

I thought to myself, there must be a way to travel around the Philippines and still be able to work on the road. I longed to fill that gap.

And so I launched a website called now-defunct PackandHustle.com.

The idea was simple—to provide useful travel guides to digital nomads who want to explore the Philippines.

When I started sharing the website within digital nomad circles on Reddit and Facebook, believe it or not, it was not received well, to say the least.  The reason? The Philippines was not ready to accommodate digital nomads yet. And I agreed.

I was young and flaky back then. So I was left disheartened that we were not giving the Philippines a shot and that they looked at my site with so much doubt.

The website was left unattended, and after a year, I shut it down.

The Pivot

Fast forward to December 8, 2022, I could not sleep because. I was thinking the travel industry is bouncing back and digital nomads moving around the world again.

Yet, there’s still no resource for digital nomads about Cebu City, my home base, and the Philippines in general.

I came up with the name, bought it, designed the website, and wrote a detailed plan about it—all on that same night.

And then my vision for PackandHustle.com was revived. But this time, with a much better plan and a braver owner.

CEBU INSIDER’s Promise

Digital nomads who have visited the Philippines, especially pre-pandemic, know we are one of the worst places for remote workers. As much as I’d love to defend it, having experienced the obstacles of living in the Philippines as a digital nomad, I’m not in a position to disagree.

Moving forward, I envision CEBUINSIDER.com to serve as the go-to resource for digital nomads and remote workers choosing the Philippines as their temporary home base.

This website will deliver relevant, accurate, and up-to-date information to help you out with your travel plans in the country.

That’s a promise!
